YHDRA’s Health and Community Development Projects

“Health and Community Development” and “Participatory Teams” are like “two wings of a bird, two wheels of a bicycle” to YHDRA.  Working on projects is the most basic activity of YHDRA.  YHDRA works through various health and community development project design, implementation, evaluation and support to realize its vision and mission.  As a non-government organization, YHDRA will continue to cooperate with international organizations, government agencies, communities groups, and grassroots teams to develop a variety of projects to improve public health and promote a harmonious society.

YHDRA从成立以来，就一直以项目作为重要支撑，多年来，围绕“性与生殖健康”，“环境与健康”两大领域，利用多学科参与、人才济济的优势，与多个国际组织和政府机构保持密切联系与长期合作，在中国西部、少数民族地区开展了许多社会发展项目。在项目设计与实施、监测与控制、督导与评估等方面积累了丰富经验。

Ever since YHDRA’s founding, the pillar of the organization has always been its projects.  Over the years, projects have surrounded the topics of “sex and reproductive health” and “environment and health.”  YHDRA capitalized on its strength of rich pool of multidisciplinary experts, close working relationship with international organizations and government agencies embarked on many important projects in China’s western region and ethnic minority communities.  Through planning, guiding, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating these projects, YHDRA gained valuable experience to tackle new projects. 

Project characteristics:

Caring for underprivileged populations: YHDRA has always cared for ethnic minorities, women, migrant population, farm migrant workers, youth, cross border marriages, impoverished groups, and HIV/AIDS families, etc. Over the years, our multidisciplinary teams have developed community surveys, rights protection, behavioral modification, and community services for these groups.

深入西部基层：YHDRA深入西部农村、边境、民族社区开展项目，与基层组织建立了良好的合作关系。这些贫困地区以及少数民族社区成为YHDRA的社会发展项目和多学科研究的基地。

Deep into the grassroots level of the western region: YHDRA worked on projects in farming communities, boarder regions, and ethnic villages in western China.  We established excellent relationships with the local leadership team.  This working relationship formed a foundation for future projects in these regions.

国际经验本土化：YHDRA在高度尊重资助者意愿的前提下，将国际先进理念和项目管理模式与中国国情相结合，如引入社会性别视角、妇女生殖健康权利，考虑西部“区情”，创造性地运用参与性方法、逻辑框架法、优先领域确定、运作式研究以及质性研究等先进的项目管理和实施方法，凝练本土化的项目运作机制，与诸多国际组织、政府部门和非政府组织建立长期的合作伙伴关系。

Adapting international experience based on local conditions: YHDRA recognize international funding parties may have lots of advanced concepts and management models.  We work hard to adapt these experiences based local culture and acceptance.  For instance, social gender view and women’s reproductive health rights may need to apply western China’s “condition” to get local acceptance.  We creatively apply participatory methods, logical framework, prioritization, and other management science methodologies and localize them into our projects.  We strive for long term cooperative relationships with our international, national, and NGO partners.

公共政策倡导：YHDRA通过项目的实施，为政府部门、相关组织提供技术支持和政策决策咨询，促进社会和谐发展。

Policy advocating: YHDRA’s projects provide policy consultation, technical support, and strategic planning to many levels of government agencies.  This helped develop policies for a harmonious society and allowed YHDRA to grow at the same time.

Projects in cooperation with international organizations:”Reproductive Health for Migrants Porject” Funded by WHO and Ford Foundation; Sexual and Reproductive Health Forum in MDGs Project”  funded by Ford Foundation and Asian-pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women (ARROW); “the Case Study on Cost and Effect of Reproductive Health and Family Planning Service Institutes in Chinese Grass Roots”; “Environment and Health Project” Funded by Rockefeller Brother Foundation; “Yunnan Mengla and Tengchong HIV/AIDS Prevention Project” funded by Geneva Global; Youth and adolescent minority sexual health and capability building project for Yunnan boarder area-Women’s Health and Rights Advocacy Partnership-South East Asia funded by ARROW. “Rural Women’s Reproductive Health Rights and Participatory Action Research Program” funded by UNFPA.  The Management Model of MCH Support-poverty Fund and Its Effect Evaluation Project cooperated with World Bank and Yunnan Province Department of Health. “Traditional Medicine Heritage and Promotion in rural community of Yunnan “project cooperation with Partnerships for Community Development; “UN-China Program ‘Culture & Development Partnership Framework- Technical Assistance on Community and Culture-based Intervention Project” cooperates with 8 organizations of United Nation AND 7 national departments. Host the Sixth Asia-Pacific Social Sciences and Medicine Conference collaborating with the Asia-Pacific Health and Social Sciences Network. With the permission of the WHO, translated the "Gender, Rights, and Reproductive Health" training curriculum into Chinese and also provided related training to health managers from neighboring countries. “Asia Regional Training Workshop on the Strategic Approach for Improving Quality of Care in Reproductive Health” and “Improving Access to Quality Reproductive Health Services for Migrants in Xishan of Kunming City Project”. Hosted “International Conference for Reproductive Track Infection (RTI)” cooperating with Ford Foundation. Other international organization partners are International Planed Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Hong Kong zigen fund, Save the Children and etc.　

与国内政府部门和组织合作开展的项目主要有：与国家人口计生委合作的“中国中西部地区计划生育优质服务示范工程项目”、“新农村新家庭计划——川滇藏地区人口健康促进项目”和“西藏和四省藏区优生优育项目”；与国务院艾滋病防治办公室合作的农民工防艾宣传项目。与国家卫生部合作的“改善中国农村生殖健康服务研究”，“加强云南农村合作医疗治理示范项目” 等。

与云南省红十字会合作的汶川地震心理援助项目等。

Projects in cooperation with government agencies and domestic organizations: Demonstrative Project on Improving Quality of Care in Family Planning Services in Western-China, New Rural and New Family Project- Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet area people’s health promotion project and Reproductive Health Project in Tibet and Tibetan Area within Four Provinces cooperating with National Population and Family Planning Commission of P.R. China. China AIDS Road Tactical Support Project operation with AIDS Prevention Office of State Department. Improving Reproductive Health Service Research in rural area of China operation with National Health Department. Demonstration Project of Enhance the management of Rural Cooperative Medical Service in Yunnan. Psychological Aid to Wenchuan Earthquake operation with Chinese Red Cross Society of Yunnan Branch, and etc.

We hope our projects work like two wheels of a bicycle to keep YHDRA rolling; our programs work like two wings of a bird to keep YHDRA flying.
